The opening of the year was celebrated on December 31, 2020 with the announcement of the award plate and greetings from stakeholders. The event was streamed on the Youtube channel of the City of Lappeenranta. At the same time, a light and video work depicting the green development of the city was presented. Watch the video here.
Event partnership
Event partnership application was open between January and March 2021. City received many applications and results are seen during the year. The model provides event producers with expert assistance, communicative visibility as well as financial support.
Participatory budgeting
Different environmental actions were realized through participatory budgeting. Citizens gave ideas and voted for the best ideas. Read more about the results here.

The city of Lappeenranta won the title of the European Green Leaf Award 2021, in a competition organised by the European Commission. This year the title was given to two cities, so in addition to Lappeenranta, Gabrovo from Bulgaria won the title.
Cities with less than 100,000 inhabitants competed for the 2021 European Green Leaf Award. According to the jury, the city of Lappeenranta has made a visible commitment to developing climate work. The aim is to achieve the city’s main goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

The Green Leaf title is an investment in the future. The victory will increase the city’s attractiveness and internationality, attract young people and bring vitality and new jobs. Lappeenranta received a prize of EUR 75,000 to be used to continue green development and share good practice in Europe. The actions and events of the year of victory were also financed by the City of Lappeenranta and the Ministry of the Environment.
