New business from side streams

FISS South Karelia industrial symbiosis service improves the profitability of business operations in the South Karelia region by enhancing the companies’ use of materials and energy. The service contributes to the generation of new business by increasing knowledge of the quantities and qualities of waste and by-product flows generated by companies. Another goal is to increase cooperation between SMEs and research organisations to strengthen business operations in the region and to facilitate the permit procedures related to industrial symbioses.

Growth from China to South Karelia

The city of Lappeenranta started cooperation with the Chinese city of Yixing, this year. Yixing is situated in the affluent Jiangsu province, approximately two hour’s drive from Shanghai. A city of 1.35 million residents, Yixing is known as an advanced environmental technology city.

The project 'Towards carbon neutral South Karelia' has been launched

The city of Lappeenranta has launched the project ”Towards a carbon neutral South Karelia”. The project will be implemented by the Lappeenranta Region Environmental Office and Wirma Lappeenranta. The project work will be very hands on, comprising a wide range of actions aimed at the common goal of promoting a transition towards carbon-neutrality in South Karelia. Extending to the end of 2017, the project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the city of Lappeenranta and Wirma Lappeenranta.

Roof-top installation of solar power systems facilitated in Lappeenranta
 

On 29 August 2016, the City Council of Lappeenranta adopted a change to the building code, which states that no permit or notification is required when solar panels and collectors are installed on the angle of the roof. This applies to detached houses and blocks of flats. The building code change enters into force on 15 September 2016.
